Reflecting on the SWAAN Conference: A Day of Inspiration and Growth

Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the SWAAN Regional Conference, a gathering that brought together passionate individuals united by a shared commitment to apprenticeships and professional development. The event was not only a celebration of achievements but also a powerful reminder of the value of apprenticeships in shaping successful careers.

A Platform for Sharing and Learning

The conference agenda was packed with insightful talks and interactive sessions. I particularly enjoyed the chance to hear from experienced professionals and fellow apprentices who shared their journeys and lessons learned along the way. It was inspiring to see how apprenticeships have transformed lives, provided new opportunities, and helped bridge the gap between education and the workplace.

A Personal Milestone

For me, this year’s conference was particularly special. Not only did I become the SWAAN Co-Chair, but I was also honoured to receive the SWAAN Apprentice of the Year Award. Both milestones have been humbling and exciting, reinforcing my commitment to championing apprenticeships and inspiring the next generation.

Receiving the award felt like a moment of recognition—not just for the work I’ve done but also for the potential apprenticeships hold to empower individuals and drive innovation across industries. It was a proud moment, but it also reminded me of the responsibility I have to continue advocating for apprentices and sharing my story.

Building Connections

The SWAAN conference wasn’t just about listening; it was about connecting. Meeting other apprentices, mentors, and advocates was a highlight of the day. It’s always refreshing to engage with people who share the same passion for creating meaningful change within the apprenticeship landscape.

These conversations also sparked ideas for my own initiatives with Not Just Girls, particularly around how we can work together to support more women and girls in STEAM apprenticeships.

Looking Ahead

As I reflect on the day, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunities apprenticeships have given me and the platform SWAAN provides to celebrate and amplify these stories. The conference reaffirmed my belief in the power of apprenticeships—not just as an alternative route to education but as a launchpad for diverse and impactful careers.

To everyone who attended or contributed to the conference: thank you for your insights and energy. To anyone considering an apprenticeship or supporting apprenticeships: keep pushing forward. Your efforts are making a difference.

Here’s to continuing the conversation, inspiring change, and ensuring apprenticeships remain a vital pathway for everyone—especially women and girls—looking to thrive in their chosen fields.

If you’re curious about my journey or want to explore how apprenticeships could work for you, feel free to reach out. Let’s keep the momentum going!
