Championing Change at the Women in Engineering and Technology Event

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending the Women in Engineering and Technology event, a gathering designed to celebrate and amplify the voices of women in industries where gender disparity has long been the norm. Hosted by Campus Media, the event brought together an inspiring mix of professionals, students, and advocates—all united by a shared passion for creating a more inclusive future in engineering and technology.

As the founder of Not Just Girls, I attended with the mission to represent the countless young women aspiring to enter these fields. This event wasn’t just an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals; it was a platform to exchange ideas, inspire change, and confront the barriers that still exist for women in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).

Inspiration Through Storytelling

One of the event's standout moments for me was hearing the personal stories of women who have paved their way in engineering and technology. Each story served as a reminder of the strength, creativity, and resilience required to overcome challenges in male-dominated industries.

These stories resonated deeply with me. They reinforced my belief in the importance of showcasing role models who defy stereotypes and create pathways for the next generation. At Not Just Girls, we strive to do exactly that: connect young women with mentors and role models who can show them that a career in engineering and technology is not only achievable but full of opportunity.

Key Takeaways from the Sessions

The event sessions highlighted vital topics, from breaking unconscious bias to fostering workplace inclusivity. Discussions around emerging technologies also underscored the importance of diversity in driving innovation.

One theme that stood out was the confidence gap—how women are often less likely to apply for opportunities unless they meet every listed requirement. Addressing this requires systemic change but also targeted support to build confidence in aspiring engineers and technologists.

A Renewed Mission

Leaving the event, I felt more motivated than ever to continue my work through Not Just Girls. It reaffirmed my commitment to advocating for apprenticeship pathways, mentorship programs, and outreach initiatives that empower young women to see themselves as engineers, technologists, and leaders.

The Women in Engineering and Technology event wasn’t just about celebrating achievements; it was about acknowledging the work still to be done and committing to being part of the solution. Together, we can build a future where women not only have a seat at the table but are also driving innovation and shaping industries.

If you’re a company, professional, or advocate looking to support women in engineering and technology, I’d love to hear from you. Let’s work together to create opportunities for the next generation of leaders in STEAM.
